Question: Our circumstances here in the lands of disbelief are difficult which is not hidden from anyone, from the temptations and the nudity and other than that, and we are brothers adhering (to the deen). Is it permissible for us to marry the Christian women and what are the conditions (for doing that)?
Answer: It is permissible for the Muslim to marry the woman from the people of the Book, a Jewish woman or a Christian woman, if she is ‘muhsanah’ and she is the one who is free (not a slave) and chaste. The basis for the permissibility of that is His (سبحانه وتعالى) statement:
الْيَوْمَ أُحِلَّ لَكُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ وَطَعَامُ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ حِلٌّ لَكُمْ“Made lawful to you this day are the good things and the food of those who have been given the Book is lawful to you…”
Up to His (سبحانه وتعالى) statement:
وَالْمُحْصَنَاتُ مِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ إِذَا آتَيْتُمُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّ مُحْصِنِينَ غَيْرَ مُسَافِحِينَ وَلا مُتَّخِذِي أَخْدَان
“…and the chaste women from those who have been given the Book before you when you have given them their dowry while desiring chastity not committing illegal sexual intercourse nor taking them as girl friends.” - Al-Maa’idah (5):5
So this verse with its generality is a proof for the permissibility for the Muslim to marry the women of the people of the Book with the condition that they are ‘muhsanaat’ and they are the free chaste ones. And the Muslim is well aware that the fulfillment of this condition in the women of the people of the Book today is rare. So it is incumbent upon the Muslim in this (matter) to be aware of being negligent in this condition because in that there is corruption for the ‘firaash’ (bed or bed partner) and the children as is obvious, and the unfulfillment of this condition makes the marriage contract invalid, and with Allaah is the success.
In the answer to another question of similar nature they said after mentioning the permissibility, volume 18, page 315: “and leaving off marrying her (the woman from the people of the Book) is more befitting and safer for the believer so she won’t draw him and his children to her religion.”
