Question: I wasn’t able to fast the month of Ramadhaan due to postpartum bleeding and I became pure during ‘Eed and I have a strong desire to fast the six days of Shawwaal. So is it permissible for me to fast them (the six days of Shawwaal) and then fast the days to make up (for the missed days of Ramadhaan). Please provide me with a fatwa and may Allaah grant you good.

Answer: What has been legislated is that you begin by making up the missed fasts based on the statement of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم):

من صام رمضان ثم أتبعه ستاً من شوال كان كصيام الدهر
“Whoever fasts the month of Ramadhaan and then follows it by fasting six days during the month of Shawwal will be rewarded as if he had fasted the entire year” - Muslim reported it in his Saheeh.

So the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) clarified that the six days (of Shawwaal) come after the fasting of Ramadhaan. So the first obligatory action is to make up the missed days even if the six days pass by (and the opportunity to fast them is missed) based on the hadeeth that was mentioned. And indeed the obligatory acts of worship take precedence over the voluntary acts of worship. And with Allaah is the success.
